Music in Pesaro goes by the name of Gioachino Rossini, with the Rossini Opera Festival taking place every year in August. In autumn the city cultural climate is also livened up by the season of prose in the Rossini theatre and the season of concerts in the Conservatory of Music.
Magic moments in Pesaro are provided from cinema with the Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema (New Cinema International Film Festival), being held at the beginning of the summer season.
Summer is also the time of feasts and fairs, gastronomic festival and historic re-enactments: Mondavio with its Caccia al Cinghiale (Boar Hun), Cagli with its Palio dell’Oca (Goose race), Urbino with its Festa del Duca (Ducal Feast).
Il Violino e la Selce (Violin and Flint), the famous contemporary music festival, directed by Franco Battiato and held in Fano, has become a long awaited appointment at national and international level.
The Prose and Music Festival takes place in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino and is divided into Sipario di inverno in winter time and Sipario d'estate in summer time. This festival includes theater, music, dance, poetry and cinema festivals and features medieval suburbs, princely buildings, ancient castles, fortresses and towers, abbeys and sanctuaries turning into astonishing stages.
February is the month of the Fano Carnival, one of the oldest in Italy, in which the master float builders create mobile works of art in papier-mâché from where thousands of sweets are thrown to the crowds of onlookers during the spectacular parades.
